Whipsnade, Bedfordshire
Whipsnade is a small village in the county of Bedfordshire, set in beautiful countryside on the eastward side of the Chiltern Hills.
Whipsnade is undoubtedly best known as the home of the internationally renowned ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The site was chosen by the London Zoological Society in 1931 to create a spacious animal park in the countryside. The Zoo has a strong programme of animal conservation and continues to be very popular today. A stunning landmark of the local downs is a great white lion carved into the chalk. This beautiful figure is the emblem of the ZSL and it can be seen for miles around.
Whipsnade village has attractive timber framed houses and a mellow old brick church set around a large green. Following a footpath for a short walk northwards leads to the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral. Managed by the National Trust, the Cathedral includes a variety of different trees and shrubs planted in the design of a cathedral. The site comprises a nave, transept, chancel, cloisters and four chapels. There is a longer, outer cloister walk with a dew pond at its centre.
